Is Indian history in school curriculum all about Mughals, British and the Gangetic valley? Why are Indian school students taught only about Mughals & British? Why are the Indian school books talking only about the Gangetic valley? Has the Indian school books ignored the South Indian history? You will get answers for all these questions here.

Bashing the Indian history curriculum has been a trend on social media especially from the Indian conservative right-wing & the South Indians.

History in India is always controversial. When Congress was in power the history curriculum was drafted by the left-wing historians and it has been criticized by the right-wing as they feel that the Marxist version of the Indian history is a blasphemy and it's against Hinduism. Since the current era is lead by the Indian right-wing, there have been many attempts by the right-wing to rewrite history, and the left-wing views it as functionalization of history.

Counter arguments to the present version of the school curriculum:

  • Right-wing: Students are taught only about Mughals by ignoring the ancient past.
  • Right-wing: Students are taught only about British & this curriculum doesn't focus on the Indian culture and traditions.
  • South Indians: Students aren't taught about Southern Kingdoms at all and they are taught only about Mughals, Rajputs, and British.
These three claims used to get lots of likes and shares on social media and lakhs of people forward these claims on social media, Before blindly believing in these narratives we can cross-check it. To cross-check this we are taking two state board curriculums and one central board curriculums.

Tamilnadu’s version is a Political History and the versions of NCERT & KSERT are more of social versions.

From the above analysis, we can find that the narrations like “Indian textbooks only talk about Gangetic valley, Islamic rule, British etc” are proved as myths.

While the books of TN and Kerala don't cover North East, NCERT covers Kingdoms like Ahom. The sixth and seventh books talk about Muvenders, Silapathigaram Tamil Sangam works, and Imperial Chola model of administration etc.

Introduction to Fine arts covers Dravidian Architecture and the Rajput architecture of Western India. While people claim that our school books don't talk about Indian culture, ironically many books are based on Indian culture, arts & society.

Hence the history which we study might have few flaws as the space is limited and it's difficult to fit the 3000yeras old history in 6 books that too for school students. But it is still somewhat inclusive(not as people claim). Our history books are a huge composition of World History & the society/Culture of India instead of glorifying kings and singing the might of some Kings like a court poet(Which is what the people expect). This disappoints the people who want fiction & wars in history books. People who have at least took school books in their lives will never claim so.
